Discover Membership Tips
When I reviewed the Membership campaign reports submitted, the question most
asked was what ideas could I offer to encourage increased in membership. With
that in mind, this page will be updated every two weeks or so with new ideas from
all across the United States from local units and what has helped them.
Selling PTA at the Convenience Store
When Laurie McCaulley, the Alabama PTA president-elect, was asked to give a
presentation at a local convenience store on the benefits of being an involved
parent and the advantages of joining PTA, her concern was making a connection
with the audience. Her strategy is to first learn about the challenges faced by the
people she’s trying to reach. This particular audience was a group of 10 people
that meet every morning at a Huntsville, Alabama convenience store for breakfast
sandwiches and coffee. Most of them live in the housing projects across the street.
She presented advice on topics such as helping with homework, communicating
with teachers, and volunteering at the school. What this indicates is that we need
to step out of our comfort zone and consider other venues for getting the PTA
message out!
Student Art Graces a School Building
When considering a way to involve high school students, your PTSA could take
the artistic approach. Consider asking the principal about using ceramic tiles to
create ownership of the school to the students. For a minimum amount ($3 for
membership plus cost of tile and portion of fee to install) the student could join
the PTA and also enhance the appearance of the school. Of course, criteria for the
artwork would have to be agreed upon by the PTA and the principal. I’ve seen
this done as a fundraiser at the elementary level but that doesn’t mean it can’t be
done at the middle and high school level.
